Personal statements: make your experience count - Which? University

You don’t need to have tonnes of work experience to sell yourself to university admissions tutors. Whatever your experience, here’s how to make the most of it. According to a report by education charity the Sutton Trust –  which analysed more than 300 personal statements –  there's lots of variation in the types of work experience applicants list in their personal statement. It highlighted that pupils from independent schools are more likely to have placement opportunities in prestigious companies than those from state schools. But even if your stint as a volunteer or your Saturday job doesn't sound as glamorous as a high-flying internship with a big company, it's important to make whatever level of work experience you have really count, highlighting how skills you've developed through your experience are relevant to the course you're applying to.

I am drawn to the fact that midwives not only provide care for women throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period but also build a relationship with them and their families by being the first point of contact for them. Another appeal is that midwives are essential in preparing women for motherhood by providing support and unbiased information to allow women to make informed choices about their care and the care of their baby.

How does one write a successful personal statement? There are two main criteria: Follow directions exactly; Distinguish yourself from the crowd. Follow Directions   This ought to easy, but applicants often miss this one. If ever there were a time when you wanted to impress an audience with how well you can read and understand directions, this is the time. So, read questions carefully and answer what they ask for. Stick to word/page limits!!
