# Write the improper fraction as a mixed number or a whole number.?

You reduce the fraction to its lowest terms first. Then you divide the numerator (the top) from the denominator (the bottom). Then, the whole number becomes the real number for the final answer, and the remainder from your division goes on top of the old denominator ((the number on the bottom of the fraction)). Your answer is the real number from the original division problem and the reduced fraction. It doesn't matter if you divide first or if you reduce the fraction first, but you should do both steps. Reducing the fraction first gives you smaller numbers to divide with; so you typically want to do that first if you are doing the problem by hand. 27/18 (divide top + bottom by 9 to reduce) = 3/2 (divide, put the remainder on top, whole number on the left)= 1_1/2 8/5 (already inlowest terms)(divide, put the remainder on top, whole number on the left) = 1_3/5 12/9 (divide top + bottom by 3 to reduce) = 4/3 (divide, put the remainder on top, whole number on the left) = 1_1/3 42/7 (just divide - you should notice its going to work out)= 6 44/14 (divide top + bottom by 2 to reduce) = 22/7 (divide, put the remainder on top, whole number on the left) = 3_1/7

There are calculators that will do this for you. There is an online one in the source. You can type in your improper fraction and add them to zero with this calculator to get a mixed number, or you can add two mixed numbers. This calculator shows you some of the handwritten work. If you don't like the calculator, there are others online. Have fun!
