Write-a-thon | Amnesty International USA Group 4 of Seattle

No December meeting (although we do have a new meeting place at the AFSC  office in the U District starting in January!). Join us instead for our annual write-a-thon on Sunday, December 7, 2014 from 4- 7 pm at Victrola Coffee and Art, 411 15th St E, Seattle, in the cafe’s meeting room. Every year, around Human Rights Day on 10 December, hundreds of thousands of people around the world send a message to someone they’ve never met. Letter writing has always been at the core of Amnesty’s work, and 53 years of human rights activism show that letters really do have the power to change lives.

How to write journalism: Peter Cole and Michael White on writing columns

The great growth area in journalism, and a product of fatter newspapers. Columns, like features, come in many forms. They are defined by ownership; the column "belongs" to its author who has that ultimate journalistic luxury, a slot, guaranteed space over which he or she presides and has, in some cases, near total control over content. The assumption is that readers seek out the writer first rather than the subject matter, because they are interested in that writer's opinion, whether or not they agree with it. The so-called "me" columns, often dealing with no more than the everyday trivia and experiences of the writer are remarkably popular, providing a printed version of soap.

Writing Your Own Ceremony Vows? Read These Tips First

Start by reading traditional, by-the-book vows from your own religion if you practice a certain faith, and others as well, to see what strikes a chord with you. Incorporate these samples into the original words you write or simply use them as a jumping-off point. Once you've found a few you love, consider what it is about the style that draws you to those vows in particular. Agree on format and tone with your fiancé. Decide how you want your vows to come across. Do you envision them as humorous? Poetic and romantic? Go over the logistics too.

How to Take Minutes

1 Distribute an attendance sheet. As soon as everyone is in attendance, distribute a single piece of paper (more for very large meetings) with space for each person to write their name and contact information. You can use this after the meeting to fill out the attendees section of your template, or attach the sign in sheet itself to the completed minutes. If you are unfamiliar with many of the people present, sketch a seating chart instead and fill it out as you ask everyone to introduce themselves. Keep it handy as you take meeting notes so you can refer to people by name when appropriate (as discussed below).

She is the perfect combination of tough ("Teresa, you are KILLING me!") and warm ("Diane, you are doing SO well"), and she works with the whole person -- mentally, emotionally and physically.
